Bohemian Zen Family Room

We have lived in our house for a year now and I am excited to say that it is almost completely furnished and decorated. When we moved in our family room (which is a converted garage) needed some TLC to truly make it ours. Perry built these custom shelves and I must say it feels like it grounds the room and frames our credenza quite well. We still have some minor tweaks and stuff that we want to add to this room but for now it functions as the perfect space for our daughter to play in and for us adults to enjoy. We hope you like our take on a bohemian zen family room.

This room is quite bigger than our last family room so our couch feels a bit too small for this space. We plan to get another section of our sectional to fill out the room a bit more. But in the meantime, we decided that we wanted to cover up as much of the carpet as possible, and the best way to do this was to get a large area rug. We fell in love with this Rizzy Home, Ellington jute rug from Rugs Direct. We know that it will be so versatile. It looks beautiful on its own as well as when its layered with another rug. The rug that is currently on top is a vintage 1970's rag rug that we scored from Old New House. I just love how the pops of color bring the room to life.

Tip*  When layering rugs it seems to work best when the rugs are different weaves and pile height (example: a shag rug over a natural weave or a natural fiber rug).

The top two shelves were designed while keeping us adults in mind and the bottom shelf was left for Winter. We have so many books. It was nearly impossible to get them all on the shelf if we had put them vertically. In order to save some space and bring in some more dimension we alternated the way we displayed them by stacking some horizontally on top of each other and keeping some upright and vertical. We also chose to put them on the middle shelf for two reasons. 1). It was one of the largest shelves and 2). The top of the books line up with the top of the credenza creating a nice line across the entire room. This one continual line is great to have when you are watching television so your eyes aren't distracted by something too busy.

Winter is super active. She is constantly dancing, playing on the floor and doing "yoga" or her version of, so we didn't want to obstruct this room in any way by getting a coffee table. Instead of a coffee table we got two Moroccan poufs from Baba Souk and a floor pillow from Eclectic Collective. These poufs work out great for us. You can prop your feet on them while you watch TV and they also make a good step stool for Winter to be able to get up and down the couch.

To tie in the rugs we opted for a set a of Moroccan wedding pillows from Baba Souk. These pillows where made out of vintage Handira wedding blankets and they are wonderful. They are adorned with tons of metallic sequins which make them feel magical. The colorful and textured pillows are from Eclectic Goods. I love how the upbeat color of the pillows compliment the rag rug while the Moroccan wedding pillows go great with the neutral tones of the jute rug.

Our family room wouldn't be complete without a family wall mural. There is so much meaning on this wall. The circular wood carving is from Thailand, which we got on our honeymoon. The paper bird house on the top right was the very first present Perry gave to me. The blue floral handkerchief in the black fame in the middle row was my something old that Perry carried in his pocket at our wedding. One of Winter's favorite pass times is to point to all the photos and say everyone's name: Dadda, Mama, Rio and baby (which is her).

We still plan to add a few more plants, get this mid-century modern chair (to replace the leather one you see pictured in some photos), get this natural side table, hang a cow skull above the window and do a really neat pattern out of wooden triangles to create a textured, wallpaper-like effect go behind the fig tree (which we'll replace with a banana palm).

A huge thank you to all the brands that made this room possible including: Baba Souk, Bannor Toys, Eclectic Collective,  Eclectic Goods,  Old New House, Rugs Direct, Sarah and Bendrix, Tiny Crane and Agave & Stone. It would mean the world to us if you checked out and supported these shops!
